There are many posts and content circulating that describe quite how bad things currently are for UK airports. Rather than dwelling on the current predicament, we thought we would turn our attention to the recovery (when it comes!) and how we could help UK airports to be best prepared for the challenges it is going to bring. To that end we have developed some scenarios outlining potential recovery pathways for the industry. These scenarios are not intended to be definitive forecasts of the future, but they are credible alternatives for how the recovery may take shape. Each highlights a range of different issues that may arise.

The purpose of these scenarios is to provide senior leaders in the UK airport business with some options against which to test their financial, strategic and operational plans. The narrative of each scenario should be considered alongside current plans and will provide insights into the challenges ahead. By taking the time to think through the strategic implications of each scenario airport leaders have the opportunity to think through their likely responses in advance. We have proposed some actions that are already worth considering as potential responses. Each scenario is accompanied by a set of passenger, flight and freight forecast tables that can be used directly to stress test current financial plans. We hope this helps the industry to think beyond the immediate situation.
