Between June 2019 and February 2020, Think Consultants Sarah McLarty and Jonathan Twigger led the planning and execution of a series of five multi-day simulation activities to support the iterative development of the Intelligent Approach (IA) tool for introduction to the Toronto Pearson Airport environment. These human-in-the-loop simulations provided the opportunity for controllers to inform the development of the functionality and HMI to best support the efficient and safe provision of separation between arriving aircraft.

Alex Hart, NATS Senior Project Manager for Toronto Intelligence Approach expressed that:

“Think have provided an excellent service in their validation leadership of the Toronto simulations. Ensuring complete continuity over resource handovers, proving they have good strength in depth across the team. All those involved have been highly knowledgeable, professional, and very easy to work with”.

The solution will now progress into the acceptance testing phase but Think will remain deeply involved in the process through providing technical expertise. In tandem, Think are also working with NATS to deploy IA at Schiphol for LVNL. Our consultants are among the industry leads in time-based separation expertise and increasing throughput for capacity-constrained airports.

Intelligent Approach is a world leading approach spacing tool which has been jointly developed by NATS and Leidos with support from Think Research. Further details can be found at: www.nats.aero/intelligentapproach
